2 The tile should now be soft enough to fold in half with your hands. Place folded piece on your bench block and tap the fold with your chasing hammer to flatten (Figure 2). Tap along the fold to make sure the crease is sharp. Anneal tile again.

3 Use chain-nose pliers to pry tile open. Place on bench block and tap with the rawhide mallet to flatten (Figure 3). The fold will make a raised ridge, dividing the tile in two.

4 Stamping designs in metal is easier when the metal is soft, so anneal again if needed. Choose metal design or letter stamps to create a pattern or phrase on the tile. Place the tile on the bench block on a solid surface. Note: If your bench block has a removable rubber base or you use a sandbag to stabilize it, remove the base or take it off the sandbag. This will give you a crisper stamp. Use your nondominant hand to hold the stamp against the metal to keep it steady. Strike the stamp with one swift blow of the brass-head mallet (Figure 4).
